Scenes from The May Pole Dance

Henry cut down a tall pole tree from Flying Goat Ranch and begins the process of cleaning it.
Janis worked the pole until it was completely stripped of bark and smoothed out.

Then the pole was trucked to The Big House at Mountain Valley Farm

We dug the hole, three feet down. Not shown here: Each participant planted a written prayer for the healing and soul expression of the Creative Spirit in that person's life, and the pole was then set down on top of these prayers. When the pole was removed and the hole filled up, the prayers remained, where they could germinate and bear fruit the following spring.
The ribbons were attached to the top of the pole and then it was planted in the hole and erected.
After the pole was planted, an adjustment was needed, we had to add a couple of more ribbons to make room for additional dancers. Thankfully, Harry was a pole climber!
We get the ribbons separated and arranged with each participant.
Now we enjoy the dance, intertwining the ribbons as we chant a special song created just for our group, blessing the Creative Spirit, asking it to join our dance and revive its Presence in each of us, individually as needed.
After the revival had concluded, we took the pole back to Flying Goat Ranch, removed the ribbons from the pole and braided them together into one long strand.
As we braided the ribbons together, they arranged themselves on the ground as a labyrinth
Janis then arranged the braided ribbons into a tight labyrinth arrangement for a "group photo," showing our energies entwined and shaped into the mythical arrangement having to do with the mystery of the Creative Spirit as it arises in Spring.
We then cut the braided ribbon strand into 12 equal lengths, put each of them into a ceremonial knot and mailed them to the participants. These pieces become our link to our buried prayers for a renewal of the Creative Spirit in our lives.
